Stellar Day at Vestavia!

What a STELLAR day at the Vestavia Hills Math Tournament for the 7th and 8th grade math teams.  Both teams had their best tournament of the year.  The 7th grade placed 2nd by only 5 points (one question).  I am so proud of the hard work by the 7th grade.  By the time Pizitz gets here on Feb. 2, I would bet this team will come away with their first FIRST place trophy.  They also won the ciphering competition 145-115 against Muscle Shoals.  Such improvement since Muscle Shoals and what about Julien's 2nd place trophy.  Great job!

The 8th graders had their very BEST day in the two years that they have been competing.  Looking at all those thirteen names on the wall was so exciting.  Your hard work in class, on Monday afternoons and at home make all the difference.  What you do at home is just as important as what you do in class and I know you realize that now.  You are 3-0 and the sky is the limit for Pizitz, Albertville, Hoover, GACS and Berry. Congratulations to Kate and Victoria for their first trophies of the year.  Great job by ALL!

Congrats to Anna Carol (10th) and Katie (15th) for placing on the mental math test.  It was tough competition.  They placed in the top 15 out of 285 students. Nice job!

Johnny Manziel talked about the 12th man in his Heisman speech.  Our parents are definitely our 12th man on Saturdays.  It is so nice to look around and see the many, many parents (30 out of 42 students represented today) and siblings at the awards ceremony.  You all are one of the main reasons for our success.  Thanks for your encouragement to me and to your child to do their very best.  Thanks to Mrs. Fillinger, Mrs. Bentley and Mrs. Seymore for the very nice goody bags.  A great day of math and fun today!

Helpful Holiday Diet Tips

1. If no one sees you eat it, it has no calories
2. If you drink a diet soda with a candy bar, they cancel each other out
3. If you eat standing up, it doesn't count!
4. STRESSED is just DESSERTS spelled backwards
5. If you eat the food off someone else's plate, it doesn't count
6. Cookie pieces contain no calories because the process of breakage cause calorie leakage

Bama Bound

What a fantastic trip we had to the University of Alabama on Nov. 20!  Tours of the President's Mansion and campus, Early College Presentation, eating in the South Field Suite of Bryant Denny Stadium, touring the locker room and Fail Room all contributed to an oustanding day.  The kids got the college experience with lots and lots of walking.  We had a great time visiting the famous Shirt Shop and Ferguson Center Super Store.  We appreciate so many parents and grandparents taking time off work to go with us and also to Mr. Page, the best bus driver.  And a huge thank you to Michael and Jill Howell as well as Dr. Causey from the university.  Enjoy these pictures of some pretty terrific young people.  They were bragged on several times during the day by university officials.  Top notch they are.

Started off with a Meet and Greet with Miss Alabama Caitlin Brunell.  She signed autographs for the girls.  Not sure why the guys did not want a signed picture.  The Mansion was rich in history and absolutely beautiful.  Don't our studetns look sharp.

In front of the Walk of Champions at Bryant Denney.  Students had fun taking pictures with the statues of coaches.
Mr. Ken Gaddy of the Bryant Museum spoke with the students during lunch.

Capstone Men and Women provide interesting information about the President's Mansion.
Dr. Judy Bonner is the new President of the Univeristy of Alabama.

In the tunnel at Bryant Denney.  Think about how many great players have passed through the tunnel.
Pretty cool!
In the South Field Suite after a nice lunch from Zoe's.
Representatives from Early College, admissions, business, HES, engineering, etc. answers questions
from students and parents.  The students were given information about early college credit.
The fee per hour is $144, quite a discount.

Civil War era sofa.  President Garland's picture from the 1850s/1860s hangs on the wall.

Showing off 14 National Championships in the recruting room just up the steps and inside fromthe Walk of Champions. We were able to tour the locker room, go down the tunnel, see the field, visit the Fail Room and then eat in the South Field Suite.  Quite an honor for such a small group as ours.  Wish you could have seen the girls getting their picture made next to AJ McCarron's life size picture.  Priceless!

8th Grade First at Muscle Shoals

Congratulations to the 8th grade math team for their impressive first place finish at Muscle Shoals on Nov. 3.  This makes them 2-0.  They won against Muscle Shoals by 38 points and won the ciphering ompetition 37 - 26.  They were 4th overall and many had their best day. Way to go Ann Carol, Mitchell, Carter and Katie.

The 7th grade placed 3rd behind Muscle Shoals and Challenger. If everyone had gotten two more questions correct we would have placed first.  We have something to shoot for at Vestavia.  There is a lot of potential with this group.  What you do to prepare outside of the classroom will make all the difference.  We placed 3rd in ciphering and 6th overall. Congrats to Carley and Nik.  Cameron was close at 11th and Julien was 13th.  Congrats!  With lots of hard work, I can't wait to see what you will do at Vestavia on Dec. 8.

Math Team Shirts

These are a possible sampling of our 2012-2013 math team shirts.  Mrs. Stephens and Amy did a great job.  The black will be for tournaments and will look nice in pictures.  The white will be the 7th grade Friday shirt and the gray the 8th grade Friday shirt.  We will change the saying on the Bearcat Math shirt.  If you have any ideas, let me know.  Something like "Achieving Success One Problem at a Time" for instance.  I will send forms home on Tuesday, September 18 and due back on Oct. 1.

CMS Open House

Thanks to all of you that came by and visited tonight.  Looks like 2012-2013 is going to be another great year at CMS.  I appreciate your patience while waiting to visit my classroom.  I never get to talk with everyone as much as I would like. Please e-mail me if you have any questions at all.  Remember to bring your Summer Math Review packet on Monday, August 20.  We will review on Tuesday and take a test on Wednesday.  I will use this test and a STAR math test to determine who might need extra help during the school day.  Please show all your work and do your BEST on the test Wednesday.

Reminders for 7th grade:
1.  Go to homeroom when the 7:40 bell rings on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.  All other days go to first period at 7:40 am.
2. Lockers will be sold on Monday, August 20 for $12.  It will take a few days to master getting your locker open so don't worry if you can't get it the first time.
3.  You can put money into your lunch account any day.  Bring any free and reduced lunch forms back as soon as possible.
4. Go by the schedule on the colored sheet, NOT the white one.
5.  Bring back the Student Handbook signed, front and back.
6.  Before you are issued a laptop, your parents must sign a form in the office.  Take good care of your laptop.
7.  Ask your teachers or someone in the office if you need anything.
8.  You might want to bring a snack for break the first couple of days.  The snack machines will be VERY crowded.
9.  Bring only what you need for your locker.  You don't want to clutter it up.  You can decorate, but no stickers.
10.  Our CMS motto:  Work Hard, Act Right, Have Fun!

8th Grade:
I sure am looking forward to seeing everyone on Monday.  Missed you all.  With lots of hard work again, we should be on track for a successful year.  Let's go 8 - 0 and it will start at Cedar Ridge on October 27.

Math Team Parent Meeting on Monday, August 27 at 6:30 pm in the library.  See you there!

Thank You So Much

I am truly humbled by your kindness at the math team celebration.  What a great night to honor the teams.  Libby, Peyton, Marissa and Emma did a great job!  Thanks to Will and David for the entertainment.  Peyton and Emma's story about piercing my ears was embarassing, but true.  Will's speech was inspiring.  The food was delicious and the atmosphere at Stone Bridge perfect.  I will certainly enjoy the beautiful flower, earrings and gift card and cherish the time together.  Much success to the 8th graders.  Continue to work hard and enjoy your high school years.  Thanks to the students and parents for an outstanding year .

Sincerely,
